In the Spotlight | Amy Kuschel Reveals Sketch for Meghan Markle’s Wedding Gown

San Francisco-based designer Amy Kuschel shared her vision for Megan Markle’s gown with us!

What inspired you to design Meghan’s dress?

Amy: I think we’re all a bit excited to have an American marrying into British royalty – especially a California girl joining the Royal Family! And I love Meghan’s sense of style. She’s a beauty inside and out. And a terrific role model. She’s less about pomp & circumstance and more about pursuing purpose.

From a designer’s perspective, she’s the perfect muse. She’s an inspiring modern day icon – the quintessential bride-to-be.

For Meghan’s Dress…

Amy: I wanted to capture her star quality with a bit of Old Hollywood glamour. I love clean lines, nothing too fussy – and I wanted her dress to feel graceful and sophisticated, but also a bit sexy and flirtatious.

I chose a trumpet silhouette – which I love for its regal presence. It’s a fitted shape that transitions into a dramatic flared hemline. It’s statuesque and makes a grand entrance without overwhelming.

For fabric, I’m envisioning Italian silk crepe: it’s luxurious and sumptuous with great movement. I used a sheer Swiss dot embroidery for the upper bodice and sleeves.

I added a charming, bow detail to the jewel neckline – my nod to Lady Di. I think it has a timeless, proper appeal. Lady Di had bows all over her dress, but here, I scaled it back just a bit.

I love that Harry incorporated 2 of his mother’s diamonds into Meghan’s engagement ring. Meghan reminds me of Lady Di – so likeable, approachable, and charming.

Personal Touches

Amy: Meghan’s mother calls her “Flower” …which is quite endearing. With that in mind, I chose to use French Alencon floral appliques. I started by appliqueing on the bodice of her dress, really highlighting her waist and showing off her figure. I love the way they dance down the front of the dress and then finish the hemline in a really natural way.
It’s one of the things I love about lace – it adds lots of texture and interest, even drama, but still feels really natural and elegant without the need for a lot of embellishment.

To add intrigue to her sleeves, I placed the floral lace applique just along the outer edge and along the hemline. I think this is going to add great movement to the sleeve and the flared shaping will be beautiful when she holds her bouquet.

A Duchess with a Generous Heart

I had so much fun designing this piece. I think I captured Meghan’s generous heart and compassionate spirit. It’s elegant, modern, timeless, and perfectly fitting for a duchess. I love tapping into a clients’ personality when designing a special piece like this. In Meghan’s case, I’m so inspired to see her using her influence to do good things. She has such a strong desire to affect change with a passion for humanitarian work.
Cheers to Meghan & Harry!
