FROM THE BRIDE We incorporated as much of our personalities as possible even down to the table numbering. Instead of numbers, we used cities of places we had traveled together or had significance in our lives. We also invited a live artist to paint the church ceremony and the reception. Guests loved watching her work throughout the night. Her completed paintings captured really special memories of the wedding, complete with friends and family in the paintings. We also were able to print our thank you cards from her images.
Our ceremony was a “big fat Ukrainian wedding” ceremony. We had 2 priests, an organist, and a full Ukrainian choir. Some of the highlights of the ceremony is when the bride and groom are crowned with olive branch crowns symbolizing becoming the queen/king of our future family to “rule with peace and integrity”. We also step on a special Ukrainian embroidered cloth to symbolize the first steps as man and wife.
Instead of a wedding cake on display we did a traditional Ukrainian wedding korovai – an ornate decorated bread. Tradition has it that the couple, without using their hands, take simultaneous bites into the cake/bread. Whoever takes the biggest bite, is said to “wield the power” in the relationship. All in good fun of course. Ukrainian dancers came and performed 2 dances. The first dance is called the “pryvit” where the dance group presented bread/salt to the room, welcoming guests with a wish of good fortune and flavor to evening and in their lives. The second dance is the acrobatic and high energy/ display of high kicks and jumps getting the crowd on their feet. We also had Ukrainian favors for the guests to take home.
